Elizabeth Taggart
Epithet: Worker in an aircraft factory
Record type: First World War Biographies
Biography: Elizabeth Taggart grew up on Ridgeway Street in Douglas. In the early part of the First World War she volunteered her services at a war hospital in Manchester, probably as a member of the V.A.D. (Voluntary Aid Detachment). Such women assisted the trained nurses, though they were not qualified themselves. Here she met and became engaged to a soldier in the Manchester Regiment. When he was killed in 1917, Elizabeth decided to do more for the war effort and began work at a Manchester aircraft factory (possibly Avro). Here among other things she learned oxy-acetylene welding. After the war she returned to Douglas. (Image ref: PG/13769/3).
